An Animal and Human Shelter
A regular photo column on all things Suwanee: a woman rides out the storm at SPCA.
Even through the recent snowstorm, the animals staying at the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) adoption center in Suwanee were well cared for.
Suwanee resident and SPCA staff member Karen Deffler stayed at the center from Sunday until Wednesday.
“They were calling for snow and I knew the animals needed to be cared for, and some needed medicine so I volunteered to bring an air mattress and stay overnight,” said Deffler.
With her husband out of town, Deffler also brought her two girls and three dogs with her for the night.
Once the snow started, Deffler saw how quickly accumulation was occurring, “I told my girls, yeah, I think we might be here a little longer.”
Deffler didn’t expect to be at the center for so long, but was glad she brought plenty of “DVDs, games and food.” At one point Deffler even showered in the dog bathtub.
SPCA is strictly a non-profit organization that rescues animals from animal control centers. SPCA prevents those animals from being euthanized and are committed to finding happy, loving homes instead.
Last year the center had more than 1,000 adoptions and hopes to double those numbers in 2011.
Though SPCA is currently undergoing renovations, it plans to re-open on Jan. 31. The animals are still living at the center, but some have been fostered out until the grand opening.
The adoption center originally operated out of two small rooms but after the renovation is complete the center will more than double in space, which results in 6,000 square feet. A new room will be added for adoptive parents to “meet their pet” and play before heading home.
Besides looking for adoptive parents, SPCA is always looking for volunteers and foster homes for the rescued animals.
