Beauty Queens, Walking Trees and a Flash Mob Take Over Suwanee
Suwanee Day 2011 had a little bit of everything.
Suwanee Day 2011 started off Saturday with weather that was just slightly chilly, but rain did not fall on the parade. The parade Grand Marshal, Miss Georgia USA Kaylin Reque of Suwanee, started the parade riding a red convertible. Among the many entries into the parade were more beauty queens, ROTC members, Boy Scouts, and many groups from North Gwinnett High School.
The festivities at Town Center Park began at 10 a.m., with vendors showcasing artwork and crafts. Food vendors lined up along the parking lot as usual and included gyros, Philly cheesesteaks and New York style pizza, to name a few. While dance studios, music groups, and other acts took to the main stage, a smaller children's entertainment stage hosted entertainment in the back side of the park.
A few highlights of the day included the making of a successful World Record of the most people doing a handstand at one time. Another highlight was the flash mob that began at the back of the park at 4:10 p.m., a bit delayed from its scheduled 4:02 time. The mob moved from the back of the Town Center lawn to right in front of the stage and was a big hit among those who knew it was going to happen and those who were surprised. The mob was organized by Royal Dance Academy of Suwanee.
Parker the dog, Suwanee's mascot, made several appearances throughout the day. A new addition to Suwanee Day was a "living tree." The "tree" moved slowly up and down the sidewalk located directly in front of City Hall.
The children's area was larger that last year's, with the addition of several rides to the always present inflatables. A velcro wall, swings, and spinning strawberry were among some of the favorites among the littlest Suwanee Day participants.
Suwanee Day concluded with music from the Lovin' Spoonful and the always anticipated fireworks.
(Suwanee Patch will have more coverage so0n of the Lovin' Spoonful concert.)
