Brooks To Get Early Start on Gwinnett BOC
The District 1 commissioner-elect plans to qualify for a portion of the current unexpired term.

Jace Brooks, who has just been elected to the Gwinnett BOC District 1 term that begins in 2013, plans to get an early start in November.
Brooks, a former Suwanee City Council member, said Wednesday that he plans to qualify for the Nov. 6 special election to fill out the current unexpired District 1 term that was left open when Shirley Lasseter resigned in May.
He likely will face no opposition. Laurie McClain, Brooks' opponent in the July 31 GOP primary, said Wednesday that she does not intend to seek the unexpired term.
The Nov. 6 special election in Gwinnett is necessary because Lasseter resigned with more than 180 days left in the term. However, if Brooks is the only qualifier for the special election, there still has to be an election, a Gwinnett County spokesperson said. Qualifying would be Aug. 22, 9 a.m. to Aug. 24, noon.
If he takes office as soon as possible in November, Brooks could represent District 1 in three 2012 meetings -- Nov. 6, Dec. 4, and Dec. 18. Currently, District 1 has no representation on the board.
District 1 represents Suwanee, Duluth and Sugar Hill on the commission.
