Customers of the U.S. Post Office in Suwanee won't notice much difference in operations if Saturday mail delivery ends as scheduled in August.
A spokesperson for the Suwanee Post Office, which is located at 990 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at Eva Kennedy Road, noted that people will "notice little change" in retail operations at the facility. As it is now, the facility will be open on Saturdays.
Steve Sakata of the Suwanee Post Office, however, speculated that "a lot more people might get post office boxes" when the agency makes its landmark change, which was announced Wednesday (February 7).
Delivery still will be made to post office boxes in the new system. Also, the Postal Service still will deliver packages to residences on Saturday.
Obviously, the move is aimed at saving money -- an estimated $2 billion, in this case. The Los Angeles Times noted that package delivery is not being halted because the continued growth of online commerce has increased the agency's shipping business by 14 percent since 2010.
However, the growth of email and online bill payment features has been a financial drain for the Postal Service. It receives no tax money, but still is subject to congressional oversight.
