Born 1/1/11 ... barely
Gwinnett Medical Center welcomes the first 2011 newborn. It's a girl.
Layla Joyce Robertson wasn't due for another six days, but she didn't want to wait. The 7-pound, 7-ounce girl was born 30 seconds after midnight, making her the first baby of 2011 born at Gwinnett Medical Center.
But little Layla was beat out for the title of first baby of 2011 by just 12 seconds. A baby boy in Guam was born 18 seconds after the clock struck 12.
Layla is the first child for mom Brittany Alicea, 21, and fiancé Sean Robertson, 24. Alicea's water broke at 5:30 a.m. on Friday morning. "I had just gone to the doctor the day before and I was only 1 centimeter dilated," she said. "We weren't expecting this at all."
The couple just bought their first house in Auburn, where Layla will grow up. Alicea calls having the first baby of 2011 at GMC "really cool."
