SPEAK OUT: Chick-fil-A Gains, Loses Backers on Same Sex Marriage

Former presidential candidate Huckabee offers support, Muppets cut ties.

The recent controversy over the stance of Chick-fil-A on same-sex marriage has now drawn in Mike Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and Fox TV commentator.

Huckabee, also an ordained Southern Baptist minister, has called for Aug. 1 to be Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, and he has set up a Facebook page for that purpose.

"The goal is simple: Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1," read Huckabee's statement on the Facebook page.

Do you support Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day? Share your thoughts.

However, the Jim Henson Co., which had worked on creating Muppets characters for Chick-fil-A, has dropped support, according to the Los Angeles Times. Proposed Muppets offerings included five build-your-own puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, using pieces that are punched out from the plastic meal container, according to a cached version of the Chick-fil-A website.

But after last week, when President Dan Cathy said the fast-food giant was “guilty as charged” of supporting “the biblical definition of the family unit,” Henson Co. nixed the partnership.

And of course, President Obama already has stated his support for same-sex marriage.

So time to Speak Out: Where do you stand on the issue? Will you participate in Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day? The Atlanta-based company has restaurants in Suwanee. Share your thoughts.

Have you looked around lately? Have you noticed a starp moral decline in this nation? Ever wonder why? We have allowed a very few to determine the moral health of this nation. Where does "Man" get off deciding that his veiw of marriage is better that God's? In the words of Ronald Reagan, "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will become one nation gone under" We have turned away from a very basic set of guidelines and tried to create our own, we have failed miserably. I'm proud of those in leadership who boldly stand on God's Word for their guidelines. We have allowed the mainstream to take us downstream to such moral decay that our children feel hopeless and life is pointless to them. We need to grow a spine and stand strong for sound doctrine. This battle is not ours, but the Lord's! We are His instruments and we need to be loud and proud of God's promises and His Commandments, not what a select few are trying to spew out as accepable. CHOOSE YOU THIS DAY WHO YOU WILL SERVE...As for me and my house, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD!!!

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

You can take gods word on this one as well....

Interesting comment Terri. What specifically contributes to this moral decline? Are you referring to a decline of absolute morality or relative morality? And who are "the few" that "we" have let determine the moral health of this nation?

I'll be there at Chick-fil-A on Aug.1. I think it is a shame that most of the other retail establishments are cowering in the corner afraid to take a stand on marriage, even though the majority of American's support the "one-man, one-woman" definition. Regardless of what "man" thinks, God's rules haven't changed and just because we become "enlightened" we are in no position to overrule HIM.

William, I am not making a stance one way or the other. Just pointing out that according to the Gallup Poll and many others: Fifty percent of Americans think same-sex marriage should be legal and bestow the same rights as traditional marriage, compared to 48 percent who don’t, according to the poll. http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/05/08/11603182-half-of-americans-support-gay-marriage-in-new-gallup-poll?lite

If the separation of church and state means anything, it must include the idea that people cannot be forced by the government to live according to the dictates of others’ religion. Just because one or many groups consider something sacred doesn’t mean that everyone must be forced to do so as well. Just because one or many religious groups consider same-sex marriage a sacrilege doesn’t mean that everyone else must be forced to define marriage in a way that would exclude gay couples.

It also isn’t good enough for people to argue that same-sex marriage is against God’s will — it’s fine if churches teach this, but no government is under any obligation to legislate in a manner that is consistent with what what any church interprets God’s will to be. That would be the very essence of what it means to live in a theocracy.
