Suwanee Library, Schools Join Read Across America Day on Friday

Also, the Gwinnett Braves will join in the national event. Dr. Seuss is the featured author.

The Suwanee branch of the Gwinnett Public Library will join Read Across America Day activities Friday, March 2. Also, Chopper, the Gwinnett Braves' mascot, will participate in the event at a school in Sugar Hill.

The library will host an event Friday at 2 p.m. Other Suwanee-area activities include:

  • Members of the Burnette family, for whom Burnette Elementary in Suwanee is named, will visit the school to join students in the reading fun. Other guests include representatives from the school’s business partners, Delta Communities and the Publix at McGinnis Ferry Road. They will read from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette and City Council members will visit Roberts Elementary throughout the day to read to students. Other guests include Suwanee police officers and Georgia Force employees.
  • Level Creek Elementary students in Suwanee will welcome their North Gwinnett High “Bulldog Buddies,” who will read to them from 9 a.m. to noon. The Buddies are student-athlete leaders who visit the school throughout the year to be mentors and motivate students to Be A Leader.
  • Starting at 2:30 p.m., Gwinnett Braves front office staff members will read aloud to Sycamore Elementary students in Sugar Hill while the team’s mascot, Chopper, will act out the words. The event will conclude with a donation on behalf of the G-Braves for 10 e-Readers to the Lanier Cluster Education Foundation.

This year, the National Education Association, a group of more than 3.2 million educators who work to improve public schools, is calling on book lovers around the nation to take up The Lorax, the popular Dr. Seuss children's book published in 1971 about the lovable creature who fights to save the environment.
