As expected, Suwanee city leaders voted Tuesday (Aug. 28) to set the 2012 millage rate, which is used to set property taxes, to 4.93.

It represents the third straight year that the city has lowered the benchmark rate. Also, the city has not raised the millage rate since 2002 (when it was 5.99), the beginning of the development of the city's signature parks system.

According to city documents, this means the typical Suwanee homeowner will pay about $426 in property taxes. The largest chunk of that (27 percent) will go to police, with the next largest amount (25 percent) toward general obligation bonds.

The city's 2012 budget is approximately $12 million.
