Suwanee continues Gateway makeover: No one can accused Suwanee officials of turning a deaf ear to citizen feedback. The city recently paid $1.25 million to buy a blighted hotel in the Gateway area near I-85. This comes less than a year after it opened a new police substation on what had been a lot holding a shuttered gas station.

Another restaurant closes: Red Brick Oven, which featured foods with a Mediterranean flair, became the latest eatery to close its doors, citing a leasing dispute.

Another restaurant to open: All is not lost for area restaurants. Friends Sports Grill, which already has a popular site in Dacula, has received its alcohol license from the city. It plans a March opening.

New car tax takes effect: Beginning March 1, Gwinnett car buyers have to pay an up front, one-time tax when purchasing a vehicle. This replaces the "birthday tax," which continues for people who keep their vehicle.

Federal sequester felt locally: The Gwinnett County school system and county-owned Briscoe Field are among those expecting some fallout from federal budget cuts.
