A crowd began gathering just before 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bay Creek Park in Loganville for the much-anticipated 2012 Transit of Venus. The celestial event is the second and last one this century. Woofstock 2012 took over Town Center Park in Suwanee in style Saturday. The people should have it so good. Among the activities were a Frisbee fetching demo, put on by Melissa Heeter of WOOF!Sports. This wasn't just any 5K run. "We had to put doggie pots out," noted Amy Doherty, events manager for the City Of Suwanee, before Saturday's Run For The Rescues 5K and fun run. The idea, of course, was not to upset homeowners in the Old Town area when a parade of people and dogs came through. And almost 1,000 people registered for the runs, which were sponsored by the Georgia SPCA. And many other people and vendors gathered before and after the runs in Town Center Park. Walt Disney once said that Disneyland would "never be finished." And so it seems with White Street Park in Suwanee. The latest addition to the park came last Saturday, when about 20 volunteers joined Mayor Jimmy Burnette and Dan Robinson of the city planning department to plant 10 dogwood trees at the rear of the park, near Buford Highway. This was done in conjunction with Arbor Day and to maintain Suwanee's Tree City USA status for the 22nd straight year.
This was the most successful season in North Gwinnett High girls basketball history. But it did not result in a state title. North Gwinnett fell to Hillgrove 56-51 during the GHSA semifinals at the Gwinnett Arena on Thursday, and their season is over. However, we take a look at the semifinal game in photos. The defending champion Norcross girls also lost Thursday, meaning that Hillgrove and Milton will meet Friday for the AAAAA title.
Now all the Suwanee high schools will turn their attention to winter sports, but it's hard to imagine a better football season than 2011. All the local teams -- Collins Hill, Peachtree Ridge and North Gwinnett -- made the playoffs, with the Bulldogs winning the Region 7-AAAAA title for the third straight year. There's a new face on the business scene in Suwanee: Big Peach, a store that sells running gear. The store opened in the past two weeks in Town Center, and says it's the only such store in Suwanee. Gwinnett County Boy Scouts invited the public to attend their Scout Surge 9/11 event on Sunday. Local heroes from the fire and police departments from Gwinnett County, Walton County and the City of Lawrenceville were honored, and American flags were presented during the special event.
