Disc Golf Course Progressing in Suwanee

Construction is under way at Suwanee Creek Park.

To those trail walkers in Suwanee Creek Park who wonder what's with all the construction, two words: disc golf.

Construction is under way for the city's own disc golf course, and it should be ready for play by the first quarter of 2014, according to Jessica Roth of the city manager's office.

Test play is planned for early December for the 18-hole layout.

Disc golf is just what it sounds like. Players use a flying disc instead of a golf ball and clubs. They advance along a given hole by tossing the disc in a specific direction, and they finish a hole by tossing the disc in a basket.

The Suwanee course will be a so-called short course, which will be easier for beginners and will allow more advanced players to play more than one round quickly.

The Suwanee course will be the only one at a municipal park in Gwinnett. Others are at Gwinnett parks in Lawrenceville and Snellville, and one is under construction at Little Mulberry Park in Dacula.

Two of the Suwanee holes will have two tees, and the so-called clubhouse will be at Buckeye Pavilion.
