Twitter Turns 6 on Wednesday

The Internet social network site has become mainstream in a short time.

Now, another example of how fast things change in the online world: Twitter turns 6 on Wednesday.

On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey tweeted the first ever tweet on Twitter, according to mashable.com.

Now, with over 500 million users, it is the largest one-to-many open communication platform on the web. The service started out as a project from the creators of podcasting company Odeo, and though it immediately showed potential, it was plagued by frequent downtime in its first couple of years, mashable.com notes.

Now, entertainers, politicians and TV talk-show hosts use it regularly. Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) has more than 21 million followers. President Obama (@barackobama) has 13 million followers.

Also showing Twitter's popularity, the Super Bowl in February set a record of 12,233 tweets per second.
