George Lindsey, who played Goober Pyle -- cousin of Gomer -- on the television sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show," died Sunday in Nashville, Tenn., according to media reports. He was 83.

Andy Griffith, 85, said in a statement, "George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit."

Goober, Andy, Barney Fife and others comprised the cast of the popular show, which was set in rural North Carolina.

Lindsey, an Alabama native, later starred in "Hee Haw."
