In 2014, It'll Be Suwanee Days

The annual mega-fest will grow to two days next year. Yes, there'll be other changes.

Suwanee's signature event will enter a new era in 2014. City officials already are planning to make Suwanee Day -- Suwanee Days? -- a two-day event.

The idea that has come up for evaluation before at City Hall now has been recommended by Economic Development Director Denise Brinson. And City Council members, who got a briefing Thursday, offered no opposition.

Calls from the community for a two-day festival got particularly strong in 2013, when rain that began falling at midday put a damper on the day's events.

However, Brinson noted that "we are not doing this because it rained at Suwanee Day (in 2013)."

She explained that some reasons the festival is being expanded is that it will spread out the approximately 50,000 visitors that attend over two days. Also, it would attract a "higher quality" of vendors, those who are "professional festivalers."

And yes, it builds in a rain date, she noted.

However, the expansion will mean no fireworks and no headline concert on Saturday evening, Brinson said.

Some things that won't change:

  • the date(s). Suwanee Day will still be the third weekend of September. That's Sept. 20-21 in 2014;
  • there will still be a parade.
