SPEAK OUT: Richard Dawson Dies

He was known for "Hogan's Heroes" and "Family Feud." Share your thoughts.

Another icon of television history has passed. Richard Dawson, famous both for the sitcom "Hogan's Heroes" and the game show "Family Feud," died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 79.

Dawson's death was announced online Sunday by his son Gary Dawson, who said his father died from complications of esophageal cancer Saturday evening, according to USA TODAY.

Dawson had his most famous role as Peter Newkirk, a British corporal with a cockney accent who was one of the prisoners in "Hogan's Heroes." The show ran 1965-71.

He was also well known as the joking host of "Family Feud" during its initial run from 1976 to 1985. His introductory line revealing the correct answer became a national catchphrase: "Survey says… "

Dawson was known for kissing "Feud's" female contestants. One of them, Gretchen Johnson, who appeared with her family in 1981, became his wife in 1991, USA TODAY reported.

And he reprised his "Family Feud" role in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "The Running Man." (See the attached video.)

He was born Colin Lionel Emm in 1932 in Gosport, England.
