Suwanee To Begin Alert System in September

Suwanee Police and city officials are near launching an emergency alert system by the end of September 2012. Residents will be able to receive notices on weather and other emergencies via several mediums.

"It's a pretty slick system," City Manager Marty Allen said at a recent City Council work session.

Allen noted that there will be three types of alerts for residents:

• General information: People can sign up for alerts on events and non-emergencies.
• Weather: These are issued through CodeRED, not the city.
• Emergencies: These would be issued by the city. Allen said there would be a "high threshold" for these, terming this for a "bona fide emergency," on such things as a water main break.

There will be no limit to the amount of phone numbers that citizens can sign up, and people can also get alerts via text or email. In 2013, residents can get multiple addresses to a single number.

DeKalb County and Fulton County are among the municipalities that already use the CodeRED system.
