Cracker Barrel: Home Cookin'

It's just like granny used to make, if your granny was from the South.

The aroma of chicken and dumplings, spiced apples, chicken fried steak, and meat loaf fill the air. No, you are not at granny and papaw's house. Cracker Barrel off of Gwinco Boulevard in Suwanee serves Southern food at its finest. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Cracker Barrel will serve you hot food quickly and have you on your way.Β

Even when the line seems long, the wait at Cracker Barrel is seldom more than 15 minutes. Tables are squeezed into every nook and cranny possible and are turned over at breakneck speed. Waiters and waitresses move food quickly, with food arriving almost too hot to eat immediately.

Our waitress, Jean Baylot, says that Cracker Barrel is very strict with employees about anything that would affect their productivity or efficiency. For instance, Baylot says, "We can't even wear watches on our wrists, or jewelry, as it can catch on trays and be a safety hazard, one we don't have time to mess with."

The food at Cracker Barrel is exactly what you would imagine Southern food would be like. Thick pancakes at breakfast can be accompanied by bacon, sausage, eggs, and hash browns. Breakfast is available at all times. Lunch and dinner menus include country staples like okra, mashed potatoes, big, thick steak fries, and vegetables. Just like true Southern meals, gravy can be poured on anything, with both brown and white gravy being available.Β

To add to the country charm, when you enter and exit, you will walk right through Cracker Barrel's general store. Candy, clothing and CDs are among some of the items sold there. Merchandise changes with the season and upcoming holidays.
