Grand Opening of The Foodery

The long awaited craft beer bottle shop opened on 12/27

A large banner hung above the storefront at 6148 Ridge Avenue in Roxborough this past Thursday to announce the grand opening of The Foodery bottle shop.

The Foodery, whom currently has two locations in Northern Liberties and Old City, began plans to open their third locations back in November of 2011. However, since then renovations and city permitting has pushed the opening day back a few times.

“It feels awesome,” said the store's general manager Yung, “A lot of people have been anticipating this opening.”

Yung and the store's owners have plans to do more then just sell beer to the Roxborough and Manayunk communities.

“I hope to help this neighborhood a lot...not just by being here and selling beer but by helping the neighboring area and the people that live around here,” said Yung. “We're employing people from this area, so we're helping bring employment to this area.”

The store's interior includes tables for dining and a Boar's Head Deli amongst the refrigerators carrying between 700 and 800 craft beers from America and around the world.

“Sam, the deli manager from The Foodery on 2nd Street, actually creates a lot of the salads, sandwiches and ingredients herself from scratch,” said Yung.

Customer's can also look forward to crafting their own custom six-packs, which come with plenty of discounts.

“If you do get a mixed six pack, you will get a 10% discount. If it is the same six pack of the kind of beer, you will get a 20% discount,” said Yung. “Say a customer gets a mixed six pack with one of our big bottled beers...that big bottle beer is added into our normal six pack price so they get a discount instead of paying full price for the larger bottle.”

Future plans for The Foodery include; adding glutton-free breads and meats to the deli, new seasonal beers and potentially in-store beer taps.

“There are a lot of tap beers that are not available in bottles right now,” said Yung. “So that can be something that people can look forward to in the near future.”

Store hours are : Monday through Thursday- 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday- 10:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m. Sunday- 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

"I think this Kevin guy works for a competitor or something the way he bashes this establishment" Oh really, Gary? Contrary to your statement, I do not work for a competitor and I am certainly not 'bashing' anything. I LIKE having a place close to home where I can buy good beer and I assume you do too, so we agree on that point. I have also pointed out that I am DELIGHTED WITH THE LARGE SELECTION at the new foodery... Just because I have an opinion that is different than your own, then that means I work for the competition?? Get your sh*t straight, Gary. Read the entire comment before you start tossing false accusations around. Doug, sorry but to say that the prices at WF are only slightly lower is just plain wrong. Here's a couple of examples: I like Belgians (maybe you like something else, but thats what I like) An 11oz bottle of Orval is $4.35 at WF; It's $7.50 at Foodery. Saison Dupont is about $10 at WF; it's >$15 at Foodery. Thats not slightly higher. My car gets 30 mi/gal, so I could feasibly go to WF get 1 bottle of Dupont and still come out on top... plus I could get my growler filled while I'm there :P And I am aware of the limited availability of LLs in Philly. The reason that I brought up growlers is because it's yet another way that Foodery will lose market share to WF. I'm curious why you're wishing that established local businesses close. Why? Because you don't like the patrons? They sell crap beer? You do realize that this way of thinking works both ways.

Wow, tough crowd. I either drive or walk by the Foodery every day and it seems to be doing well...not sure why there is so much negativity here. I, for one, will be a frequent visitor and wont mind parking one block away. I agree that there are too many hair/nail salons and dollar/consignment stores along Ridge Ave so this establishment is a step in the right direction.

I miss having lunch at the counter at Woolworth's, now occupied by a junky dollar store and a daycare. After that I could go next door to Bobman's and buy a pair of sneaks.

Growlers are now available at The Foodery on Ridge, taps as well. Lots of great selections rotating.
