Will HP Layoffs Affect Suwanee Facility?

The struggling technology company has a data center on Satellite Boulevard.

it's not known now how the massive layoffs Wednesday by tech conglomerate HP will shake out over the country. But if early media reports are any indication, workers at the company's data-storage center in Suwanee could come out OK.

The California-based technology giant announced Wednesday that it will eliminate 27,000 jobs -- about 8 percent of its workforce -- by 2014 to cut costs amid changes and tough competition in the industry, according to media reports.

HP's revenue is being squeezed by competition from Dell, Apple, IBM and others on multiple product fronts, USA TODAY reported. The projected slackening demand for PCs this summer won't help matters, nor will HP's lack of a tablet strategy.

However, the report noted that HP expects to use the cost savings to increase investments in cloud computing, big data and analytics, and security, which could boost the Suwanee case.
