Kyle Maynard Seeking Larger Suwanee Fitness Center

A year ago at this time, Suwanee resident Kyle Maynard was climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. Now, he's looking for a new horizon at home in Suwanee.

Maynard, a congential quadriplegic, has applied to city officials for a Special Use Permit that would allow him to operate a larger fitness facility.

Maynard's CrossFit operation wants to operate in an 11,200 square foot facility at Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and Shawnee North Drive, according to documents submitted to city officials. City staff has recommended approval with conditions to City Council members, who will vote on the matter at a future meeting.

"In our current location members are faced with cramped workout conditions and being extra cautious while they train to not infringe on the personal space of other members," Maynard said in a letter to city officials. The letter added that the new location also would offer more parking capability.

The Special Use Permit will be necessary to allow so-called public assembly, according to city Planning Director Josh Campbell. The city's Future Land Use plan for the area recommends office-industrial. Therefore, fire standards are different than for a business that would regularly have customers. The largest class for the proposed fitness center would be for about 15 people, Campbell noted.

"We do not believe we would be a hindrance to the surrounding businesses. In fact, we believe we will provide a service other business owners in the building will be excited to participate in."

Maynard's letter adds that peak hours of operation are after 5 p.m., after most people have left the building.

"Our mission is to build a healthy community in Suwanee and we kindly ask that you help us do so by granting this request."
