Target Makes an Offer After Card Security Breach

The retailer acts after disclosing a massive security breach affecting millions of customers' credit and debit cards.

Attention, Target shoppers. The recent massive security breach involving credit and debit cards nationwide has spawned a discount.

According to media reports, the retailer, which has outlets in Gwinnett County, is offering a 10 percent in-store discount on Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 21-22). Also, the retailer is offering free credit monitoring.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times, customers are noting their anger on social media after the disclosure that hackers broke into Target’s systems and gained access to about 40 million customer credit and debit card accounts between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

In an online statement posted Friday, Target CEO Gregg Steinhaflel said in part:

"We’re in this together, and in that spirit, we are extending a 10% discount – the same amount our team members receive – to guests who shop in U.S. stores on Dec. 21 and 22. Again, we recognize this issue has been confusing and disruptive during an already busy holiday season. We want to emphasize that the issue has been addressed and let guests know they can shop with confidence at their local Target stores."

The CEO also noted shoppers’ difficulties reaching Target via its website and call center, the Times reported. The CEO blamed “unprecedented call volume” and said the company is “working continuously to build capacity.”
