Waffle House: Home Away From Home

Even the recent storm in Suwanee couldn't make them close or keep regulars away.

While this is a restaurant review, for the first time in doing this column, the picture will not be of the food, it is of a waitress. That is because Waffle House is more than the food served there, it is family.

Waffle House on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and Interstate 85 serves the same food as the other franchised locations. Waffles, as the name suggests, are the main attraction. The hash browns come scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced, peppered, capped, topped, and country.

Once you place your order, your waitress yells it to the cooks, who cook right in front of you. Waffle House's menu includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, including patty melts, hamburgers and steaks. The food is consistent, the price is very reasonable, and the servings are satisfying. The true heart of Waffle House is not the food, though, it is the people.

Waffle House works because of its regulars. With a hometown diner feel,  some locals are there everyday. Herman Honeycutt of Suwanee says, "I come here at least 3 to 5 times a week. The same waitresses wait on me, they know my family, they remember my orders."

The regulars are so important that you can go on Wafflehouse.com and register for special coupons reserved just for the frequent customers. For regulars, having a Waffle House meal is eating with family who knows your name and what you like and don't like, and a family who is always there for you.

Patty Howard, a Suwanee Waffle House waitress, likes the fact that they are always open. She can work morning or night and she knows that her friends, or patrons, will be there. She also knows that they depend on her and the restaurant to be there.

Even the recent weather events in Suwanee did not keep the regulars, and those who were going stir crazy, away. "During the snowstorm, we stayed open the entire time; we were wall to wall with people. Our regulars still came out, and new people who couldn't find anything else open were here too," Howard said.

So for this food column, the food is secondary to the friends and family. The food is good, but the people make it great.
