Tomfoolery

Having gone to the Gold Dome during the session now for a couple of years I have sat through many hearings and observed the process. If only the voters knew more about the legislative process and how things are done. Our ignorance about what transpires during the session and legislative process contributes to our frustration and sense of helplessness to change the direction of our State and Country. It is not easy to find the truth between the smoke and mirrors of legislative double speak.

We put our trust in principles, yet elections today have become more about marketing and less about the truth or consideration of the elected officials voting record. The voters are far removed from the people they elect to represent them and thus fall victim to their own ignorance.

Don’t be fooled by the smoke and mirrors being used by career politicians to distort their record. The current focus is on SB 167, a bill intended to reverse course on a hot button issue, Common Core. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) where instituted by Governor Perdue in 2010. They came to Georgia without a vote by the legislature and had an incentive that was just too hard for the Governor to pass up. Money or as I like to say the “Carrot & the Stick”.

SB 167 has been hijacked by amendment to appear to do one thing, but in reality it is going do the opposite. Career politicians are making it appear to be something that it is not. Tom Foolery!

The questions remain. Who should control the education of our children? Should it be our local school boards, which are more closely tied to our community and values? CCSS represents an attack on the local control of public schools. Under the guise of Standards, which certainly have merit, the debate has been politicized to detriment of the children.
