5. Today in History: On this date in 2001, Congress certified George W. Bush as the winner of the close and disputed presidential election the year before. Vice President Al Gore presided over the session, but the year before, Gore became only the third person to win the U.S. popular vote but lose the electoral vote. The Supreme Court had voted to halt Florida's manual vote recount, giving that state's electoral votes to Bush. (Source: history.com.)
