5. Today in History: On this date in 1789, the U.S. held its first presidential election. As expected, Revolutionary War hero George Washington was elected the first president. Only white male property owners were allowed to vote then. Even then, the U.S. used the Electoral College system, established by the U.S. constitution. (Source: history.com.)
