5. Today in History: On Nov. 27, 1978, San Francisco mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were shot to death at City Hall by former city Supervisor Dan White. The assailant reportedly had been angry about Moscone's decision not to re-appoint White. Eventually, White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, saying that consuming copious amounts of junk food caused him diminished mental problems -- the so-called "Twinkie defense."
