5. Today in History: On this date in 1972, Richard Nixon was re-elected president of the U.S., defeating South Dakota senator George McGovern. Only 55 percent of the electorate voted, the smallest turnout since 1948. McGovern had outspoken views on the Vietnam War, vowing to pull the U.S. out of Southeast Asia within 90 days of taking office, regardless of whether U.S. POWs were released. (Source: history.com)
