5. Today in History: On Oct. 12, 2000, a motorized rubber dinghy carrying explosives blew a 40-by-40 foot hole in the side of the USS Cole, a Navy destroyer that was refueling in Aden, Yemen. The attack killed 17 sailors and wounded 38. The destroyer's stop was scheduled for four hours, indicating that the perpetrators had precise knowledge about the unannounced visit. Six men were eventually arrested, but lacking cooperation by Yemeni authorities, the FBI has failed to conclusively link the attack to Osama bin Laden.
