5. Today in History: On Oct. 15, 1991, Georgia-born Clarence Thomas was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the U.S. Supreme Court. Thomas was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to replace the retiring Thurgood Marshall. The confirmation hearings became controversial when Anita Hill, a former aide to Thomas, testified that Thomas subjected her to sexual harassment with an apparent campaign of seduction.
