Today in History: On this date in 1977, a chartered plane carrying rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in southeast Mississippi, killing band members Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines and Steve Gaines and three others. Twenty other people survived the crash. The flight started in Greenville, S.C., and was bound for Baton Rouge, La. The same aircraft had been rejected by the band Aerosmith the previous summer, over concerns about the flight crew. (Source: history.com).
