With the importance of sports in high school, how does education fit in?

When Peachtree Ridge played Newnan High School, it was broadcasted live on Georgia Public Broadcasting. During the broadcast, you could also vote on a poll question of the night through a live chat. On this particular night the poll question was, "Are athletics as essential to high school as academics?"

Take a moment and guess what the results were. Did you guess about 50/50?

The poll ended with the majority going to the No's, but by a very small margin.

The yes side voted that athletics help students become more well rounded and could provide further education in the form of scholarships.

The no's say that athletics can get in the way of education and be a distraction.

Maybe it's not so black and white. Athletics could be distracting for some kids or they can be motivating. Making sure that kids are on top of their schoolwork before allowing them to play is one way to ensure that both grades and sports get equal importance.

So here is a new poll question for you.

Can sports and education be equally important for high school students? How can parents make sure that their kids are working hard and playing hard?
