Spice Up Your Brand on Social Media

The other day, I got a notification on Facebook that a friend was suggesting I "like" a certain page. I'll be honest - I can be pretty picky about giving out "likes" on Facebook pages. But, I took a quick look at the page just to see if it interested me.

No cover photo.
A pixellated profile picture.
Mediocre posting.

Eh... thanks, but no thanks.

Social media is not just a place to push content. Engage and relate! Tell the stories of not only your employees, but your audience as well.

But, you can't just tell stories through text (or people will stop reading) – tell it through visuals! Brand your pages and produce great content. It's as simple as that.

Below are a few tips on how to improve your Facebook and Twitter profiles!

Facebook

Profile details:

  • Scale your logo (or a self-portrait, if you prefer) to fit the square, so that nothing gets cropped out.
  • Your cover photo should help tell new visitors what you are about, or something special about your brand.
  • Tabs are an easy tweak! Pick an appropriate color and an easy to read font to use on your tabs.
Posts:
  • Have a variety of posts - links, videos, text and images. Use high-quality graphics and images (here's a list of resources for free stock images).
  • Put your logo on your graphics – people will easily see it when the image is shared on Facebook or pinned on Pinterest.
  • Size your graphics appropriately to display properly on Facebook. Whether it be the cover photo, blog posts or static images – this great blog will help you!

Twitter

Profile details:

  • Again, scale your profile picture to fit the square, so that nothing gets cropped out. The square is smaller, so simplify your logo if necessary!
  • The header image should also match your brand. It could be something simple like your brand colors, or a photo of your product - like Honda. (Twitter profiles have changed, so read up on the new dimensions!)
  • You can edit the color scheme on your profile – so change it to match your brand!
Posts:
  • Like all social media channels, have a variety of posts - links, videos, text and images. Use humor, provide value, and use hashtags!
  • Again, size your graphics appropriately to display properly. 1024 x 512 is the ideal dimensions for photos. Users are more likely to engage or RT your posts with images!
  • Twitter is a great place for conversation – something a lot of brands are missing out on. Engage with your followers, encourage discussions, and even use direct messaging if necessary.

So, it's pretty simple: brand your images and correctly size everything! Just takes a little extra attention to detail.
