Ice Accumulation Possible in Gwinnett on Friday

Get ready, Suwanee and Gwinnett. A weather system that could bring frozen precipitation is expected to arrive late Thursday (January 24) and continue into Friday.

In a "special weather statement," the National Weather Service in Peachtree City said, in part:

...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE FRIDAY... A COLD FRONT WILL APPROACH THE AREA THURSDAY NIGHT...BRINGING PRECIPITATION TO NORTH AND EVENTUALLY CENTRAL GEORGIA. IN THE MEANTIME...A COLD...STABLE AIRMASS WILL DEVELOP AT THE SURFACE... WEDGING DOWN THE EASTERN SLOPES OF THE APPALACHIANS. AT THE ONSET OF PRECIPITATION FRIDAY MORNING...A BRIEF PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET CAN BE EXPECTED BEFORE TEMPERATURES WARM TO ABOVE FREEZING.

A graphic on the NWS website shows that most of Gwinnett County could get up to 0.10 of an inch of accumulation of freezing rain or sleet. The greatest chance of such frozen precipitation would be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, the map shows.

As far as whether Gwinnett County schools would be cancelled over such a threat, students and parents can only wait. The system's official policy calls for making the decision as late as 6 a.m. on the day of.

Higher-elevation areas just north of Gwinnett and metro Atlanta have the greatest chance of seeing accumulation of frozen precipitation.
