UPDATED: Lanier High Student Dies in Crash

Gwinnett Police are reporting that Johnathan Campbell of Buford was killed in an accident in Buford.

A Lanier High School freshman was killed Wednesday morning in a car accident in unincorporated Buford, according to Gwinnett County police.Β 

Johnathan Campbell, 15, of Buford was killed in the accident at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and 1st street, police said.

The accident happened about 7 a.m. A preliminary investigation indicates that a blue Chrysler 300 was headed southbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and turned left onto 1st Avenue. A black Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading north on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and struck the right passenger side of the Chrysler as it turned in front of the Jeep.

Β The drivers of both vehicles were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said in a report. Injured were Rebecca L. Campbell, 17, of Buford (a senior at Lanier High) and Jhony C. Velasquez, 34, of Duluth. Rebecca Campbell was driving the Chrysler, Velazquez was driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said.

Two other vehicles received minor damage from a secondary collision as a result of the initial accident.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors to the accident, police said. Velasquez was charged with driving without a valid license. Β Any other charges will be determined as the investigation continues.
