Auto-Correct Fail Caused School Lockdown in Georgia

Authorities briefly closed two Hall County schools Wednesday. The word 'gunman' accidentally appeared in a text message.

We've all experienced glitches with the technology that has virtually taken over our lives.

Last week in the Atlanta area, an auto-correct feature on a mobile device took a dark turn, prompting a school lockdown in nearby Hall County.

According to media reports, a student’s text message — “gunman be at west hall today” — was accidentally sent to a community member’s phone.

The message was supposed to say “gunna”, but the phone’s auto-correct feature changed the slang term to something a bit more inflammatory: gunman.

The message being sent to a wrong number only added to the confusion, according to the Gainesville Times. The recipient reported the text to police, who told the schools to lock down while they tracked down the sender. The schools involved were West Hall high and middle schools, the Times reported.

Once the police did reach the anonymous recipient, they discovered it was an auto correct mistake.

“It was a combination of odd circumstances,” Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office told The Times. “We want to emphasize that the recipient did the right thing in reporting the message.”

This is not new to the millions of people who use smartphones as a matter of daily routine. So share with us -- what's the most embarrassing auto-correct mistake you've ever had happen to you? Tell us in the comments.
