Pedestrian Injured in Suwanee Accident

The person apparently attempted to cross a lane on McGinnis Ferry Road in which traffic was not stopped, the police report said.

A Suwanee teen was injured Thursday (Aug. 8) when he was struck by a vehicle in the afternoon on McGinnis Ferry Road, police said.

According to the Suwanee Police incident report, the victim was struck in the left lane of traffic by a vehicle headed westbound in front of the Amli apartment complex in the 4000 block of McGinnis Ferry Road.

The pedestrian, a 15 year old male, was transported to Gwinnett Medical in Lawrenceville for trauma care by paramedics. Based on driver and witness statements, the pedestrian apparently was at fault for failing to yield right of way to vehicles when crossing a roadway without an available pedestrian crosswalk, police said.

According to the police report, the driver said she was traveling slightly under the speed limit due to the amount of traffic when her vehicle struck a pedestrian who entered the lane of travel. The driver said she did not see the pedestrian until after her vehicle struck him.

Witnesses said it appeared that the pedestrian was headed southbound from Amli and was attempting to cross McGinnis Ferry Road through vehicle traffic. There is no crosswalk or other traffic control for pedestrians at this location on McGinnis Ferry Road.

The pedestrian entered the roadway and proceeded in between two vehicles that were stopped for traffic in the right lane. Witnesses told police that the pedestrian then continued into the left lane (which was NOT stopped) and was struck by the driver, who appeared to be going near the speed limit. There was no indication from the witnesses that the pedestrian paused at any time during his crossing to watch for oncoming traffic, the police report said.

The pedestrian was not issued a citation.
