Gwinnett Student Says Broken Leg the Result of Bullying

Snellville fifth-grader says he was bullied while playing basketball.

A fifth-grader says a broken leg he suffered earlier this week was the work of a bully.

According to a report on Fox 5 in Atlanta, the 10-year-old said he was injured, along with a classmate “when another fifth-grader pushed both boys down and stomped on them.”

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman Jorge Quintana confirmed in an email to Snellville Patch that the incident occurred Monday during a physical education class, where a fifth-grader “allegedly made physical contact with two other boys,” resulting in injuries to the two boys.

The boy who allegedly assaulted the boys was disciplined.

Quintana said the P.E. teacher broke things up and reported the incident to school administration, which then met with the boys and family members.

“The boy who reportedly caused the injuries was disciplined,” Quintana said. “The school also has met with parents to discuss other accommodations for all three students involved.”

According to a Gwinnett County School Police report, the boy was arrested for battery and released to his parents.

Quintana said the school system takes bullying seriously, addressing it as part of its Student Conduct Behavior Code.

“The school system has a safety committee which was formed to identify and provide resources and support to the local schools in addition to the work schools are already doing,” Quintana wrote in his email to Patch. “Schools address bullying as part of advisement classes, activities, on an individual basis with students, and as part of events with parents to help them recognize it and address it.

“In the event that cases of bullying were to come up, school administrators thoroughly investigate and take the appropriate disciplinary action. Schools also follow up with the students involved to prevent future cases.”
