Scam Alert: Caller Claims You Owe Money for Missing Jury Duty

Scammer wants victims to pay "fine" with Green Dot card.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert on its Facebook page about claims of bogus fines for failing to show up for jury duty.

A caller pretends to be with the sheriff’s office and tells the phone-taker that he or she owes money, and can pay them with a Green Dot card.

Here’s the alert:

PHONE SCAM WARNING: We are hearing reports of citizens receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office advising that they owe a fine for not showing up for a jury summons. This is a scam that is being perpetrated in numerous jurisdictions, so don't fall for it! No law enforcement agency is going to attempt to collect payment from citizens over the phone, ESPECIALLY using Green Dot cards! Please share this status to help protect your friends and family, regardless of where they live.
