Storm Caused Gas Leak in Suwanee

Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services responded to emergencies in Gwinnett overnight.

The thunderstorms that rolled through the Suwanee area early Sunday (May 19) caused a gas leak in Suwanee.

According to a news release from Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters responded to a gas leak in the 4300 block of Smithtown Road in Suwanee.

Fire crews found an active gas leak outside that was reportedly caused by lightning. The leak appeared to be coming off the main feed, the release said.

Firefighters secured gas to the residence, and requested the gas company to respond. According to the release, lightning caused a hole in the ground and knocked out power to the home.

The release noted that officials began monitoring the weather and increasing call volume about 3 a.m. as storms moved across the area.

House fires also were reported in Buford, Snellville and Lawrenceville.

A flash flood warning was in effect until 12:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
