Suwanee Police Holding Medical Disposal Event

The "Take Back" program is for safe discarding of prescription meds.

The Suwanee Police Department is holding a special event Saturday for people with unused or unwanted prescription drugs.

In conjunction with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's nationwide effort, the Suwanee agency again plans the "Take Back" event April 30, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at headquarters at 373 Buford Highway, 30024. Anyone with expired, unused or unwanted prescription medication can bring it to the department for safe disposal. Flushing or regular trash disposal of prescription medication presents potential health and safety hazards, officials say.

In the inaugural event last fall, Americans turned in 121 tons of prescription drugs at 4,100 sites nationally; Suwanee collected more than 20 pounds.

β€œThe Take Back program is designed to eliminate unused prescriptions from medicine cabinets, making them less accessible and tempting to teens and others," Suwanee police Sgt. Bryan Hickey said in a release. "The Suwanee PD is happy to be part of that effort.”
