9/11 Artifact Headed for Suwanee

City officials also are checking out SculpTour proposals.

Suwanee's public display of art affection eventually will have a symbol of national significance.

A remnant of the World Trade Center towers destroyed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 is en route to the city, although details are sketchy.

Economic Development Director Denise Brinson said last week that Suwanee officials have been notified that they will be given a steel remnant by New York officials. Suwanee responded to an RFP by New York to be granted the piece. It apparently is being done to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Also, Suwanee officials have begun sifting through proposals for SculpTour, a city-wide display of outdoor sculptures. Plans call for 10-20 pieces of art to be displayed from May until March 2012. Stipends of up to $1,000 and cash awards totaling more than $5,000 are being offered. All support is offered by private individuals and companies.

A meeeting was held March 15 at City Hall to begin going over the 29 proposals, but discussions were in executive session.
