Suwanee To Elect New Council Member in July

Brooks to resign later in May after formally qualifying for Gwinnett BOC race.

The City of Suwanee will hold a special election in July to replace departing City Council member Jace Brooks, who plans to qualify for the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners race this month.

City Manager Marty Allen said Thursday that the new council member likely would be sworn in by the following council meeting. Voting would be held at City Hall.

Brooks said Thursday that he plans to formally qualify for the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners election on May 24. He must resign his council post upon qualifying.

That move, which he announced last year, means the May Suwanee Council meeting will be Brooks' last.

Brooks will be seeking the District 1 spot currently held by Shirley Lasseter, who is not seeking re-election after one term.

Also, Suwanee accountant Laurie McClain has said she will seek the District 1 post. She also would have to formally qualify May 23-25.

Brooks has been a Suwanee council member since 2002, and he also has served as mayor pro tem. He has said he wants to bring "some of what we have learned in Suwanee to the county level."

This also means that Brooks will resign from the board of the Gwinnett Convention & Visitors Bureau.
