Election 2012: Decision Day Arrives in Suwanee, Gwinnett

TSPLOST and the Gwinnett BOC District 1 matters are being decided. Share your thoughts.

There is no tomorrow, for voters or some candidates.

Tuesday, July 31, is the official primary voting day for Gwinnett County. Voting is at county precincts; the Secretary of State's voters page has a listing of precincts.

Several key matters on the ballot concern the Suwanee area:

  • Gwinnett BOC District 1 race: Jace Brooks, former Suwanee City Council member, and Laurie McClain, an accountant with an office in Suwanee, are seeking the vacant seat. Brooks has enjoyed a sizable fund-raising advantage, and has been endorsed by the mayors of Duluth, Suwanee and Sugar Hill.

         Brooks and McClain said Monday that they both voted early. Brooks noted that he picked up more endorsements (state Rep. Brooks Coleman, state Sen. Renee Unterman). McClain said, "I have been really amazed at the number of folks who are willing to ask me questions when we call them ... we have some very passionate and interested voters here in this district.  They really want to make informed decisions and they have expressed over and over again how much they appreciate the personal phone calls.

The winner of the GOP vote will become the new commissioner, as no Democratic candidate has declared a candidacy.

  • TSPLOST: The transportation referendum is controversial everywhere. Suwanee and Gwinnett elected officials support it, as does Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. such as Cox Enterprises and Georgia Power.
  • Casino gambling: . Possibly affected would be the proposed gambling facility in Gwinnett.
