Gwinnett 2014 SPLOST Could be 90 Percent Transportation

Suwanee City Council votes to be a part of the program.

Suwanee city officials have officially opted in to a possible 2014 Gwinnett SPLOST program.

In a called meeting Thursday, the City Council voted to join in an intergovernmental agreement with Gwinnett County on renewing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The current 1 percent tax expires in March 2014, and Gwinnett officials could make the formal call for a public vote on a new tax as soon as this month.

Material given to Suwanee council members Thursday indicated that 90 percent of the proceeds from a new SPLOST would be earmarked for transportation. The rest would go to recreation.

In a meeting of city and county officials in June, Gwinnett leaders suggested that 70-75 percent of 2014 SPLOST monies should go toward transportation-related projects.

Also yet to be determined is the length of the proposed tax -- three or five years.

The Gwinnett Municipal Association is handling talks on behalf of the county's 16 cities.

SPLOST proceeds are an integral part of the cities' capital spending. According to the Gwinnett County website, Suwanee has taken in about $8.2 million from the current SPLOST, which began in 2009.
