Gwinnett BOC Qualifying Opens Wednesday

Two with Suwanee connections are seeking District 1 seat. Nash plans to qualify Wednesday.

The election season officially opens Wednesday in Gwinnett County, as qualifying for elected offices begins and continues through Friday.

For the Suwanee and Duluth areas, it specifically means that a new Gwinnett BOC District 1 commissioner is coming. Jace Brooks, an outgoing Suwanee City Council member, and Laurie McClain, a Duluth resident who has a Suwanee accounting business, say they will place their names on the ballot.

Also, Gwinnett BOC Chairman Charlotte Nash is up for re-election. She plans to qualify on Wednesday; she already has raised more than $30,000 toward re-election.

Candidates for either major political party must qualify at their party's headquarters, and the parties will relay that information to Gwinnett election officials.

Brooks and McClain already have been actively campaigning and fund-raising. .

Brooks has been a member of the Suwanee City Council, which has a track record of tax reductions and citizen engagement since it began developing its parks system in 2001. McClain has been involved with the citizens review panel for the Gwinnett County budget process.

The primary election is July 31, and that becomes the de facto election for the chairman and District 1 posts. Nash has no announced opposition. Brooks and McClain will qualify as Republicans, and no Democratic opposition has surfaced.

Advance voting for primaries is July 9-27. The general election is Nov. 6.
