Gwinnett, Cities Want 3 Year SPLOST

About 78 percent of the funds would go to the county. Share your thoughts.

Updated 3:48 p.m.

Gwinnett commissioners Tuesday (Aug. 6) approved an agreement with cities for a three-year SPLOST tax beginning in 2014.

The renewed sales tax -- 1 cent per dollar -- is estimated to bring as much as $498 million. The official call for the Nov. 5 public vote is expected to come later in August.

About 78 percent of the monies ($392 million) would go to the county, with about 21 percent to the Gwinnett cities, according to the agreement. One percent goes to pay state administrative costs.

Gwinnett officials plan to devote 70 percent of their 2014 SPLOST monies to transportation. The cities, acting within the Gwinnett Municipal Association, plan to devote an aggregate amount of 65 percent to transportation.

"I'm very pleased that we were able to work together and reach agreement on how this potential funding would be used," Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said. "We agreed that transportation infrastructure is our biggest need."
