Gwinnett Citizens SPLOST Committee To Meet

The public is invited to attend.

The citizens panel that plans to advise Gwinnett leaders on SPLOST-related transportation projects has scheduled its first meeting.

According to a county news release, the Citizens Project Selection Committee will meet on Monday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Gwinnett Department of Transportation headquarters, 620 Winder Highway, Lawrenceville.

The meeting will be attended by the representatives of six major interest groups who were selected by peers to serve on the committe -- homeowners (one each from the four commission districts), the business community, environmental stakeholders, schools, civic organizations and Gwinnett County’s seniors.

“During this first meeting, the committee will get information about project categories that will be funded by the SPLOST renewal if voters approve it in November," Director of Transportation Kim Conroy said in the release. "We’ll ask them to start thinking about how to allocate funding to these various categories.”

The committee also likely will set its meeting schedule for the rest of the year.

Gwinnett commissioners formally have called for a public vote Nov. 5 on whether to renew a 1 cent per dollar Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The current tax expires at the end of March 2013.

Commissioners have proposed that the new tax run for three years. Also, the county and Gwinnett's cities leaders have said they would use most of the funds from the new tax for transportation-related projects.

Members of the committee were selected from among peer groups during an organizational meeting that was held on Aug. 26.
