Gwinnett County Election Night Blog

Follow our coverage of the July 31 vote in Gwinnett County.

Election Day in Gwinnett County was largely about drubbings.

The TSPLOST vote to establish a penny tax to fund road projects appeared soundly defeated in metro Atlanta. In Gwinnett, voters chose "No" at a 70% clip in a measure that never really seemed to have a chance to pass. Region-wide, voters turned down the transportation tax 63% to 37% with a small percentage of votes yet to be counted.

Incumbents, like Congressmen Rob Woodall (R, District 7), Hank Johnson (D, District 4) and Paul Broun (R, District 10) easily won their primaries, as did State Senator Don Balfour (R, District 9), who won comfortably over two challengers.

There were some closer races. Incumbent Mike Beaudreau appeared headed to a run-off after drawing 47 percent of the vote in the four-man race in County Commission District 3.

Many other races and issues were on local ballots, drawing a 25-percent voter turnout in Gwinnett, according to Secretary of State stats.

Check back with Patch Wednesday for more information on local races.
