Gwinnett OKs Funds for McGinnis Ferry Traffic Signal

Suwanee already had approved its cost for the light at a busy intersection.

The final hurdle has been cleared in obtaining a traffic light at a busy Suwanee intersection.

The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners on Tuesday (May 24) approved $145,000 for the construction of a traffic signal at McGinnis Ferry Road at Scales Road. .

Public clamor for a light at the intersection peaked last November, after a head-on collision killed two people and seriously injured another.

The intersection sits at the crest of a hill, which limits visibility in both directions, particularly at night.

In the fatal accident, a vehicle driven by David Dowdy of Bogart, who had recently left work nearby, crossed the center line at a median break where the traffic light will be located. He collided with a vehicle driven by Mike Strickland, who had his mother Jean Strickland as a passenger. Jean Strickland and Dowdy were killed in the collision.

The police investigation drew no conclusions as to the cause of the accident. The Gwinnett medical examiner said that alcohol and drugs of abuse were not factors in the accident.
