Gwinnett Seeking Donated Heaters for Senior Citizens

County Senior Services activates its Project AWARE program with Gwinnett Fire/Emergency Services.

Gwinnett County Senior Services is again asking for help in keeping seniors warm this winter.

For the third year, GCSS has activated its Project AWARE program in conjunction with the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Donations of electric portable heaters (UL tested) for seniors are solicited and then distributed through Project AWARE (Added Warmth Assistance for Residences of our Elderly).

“Our seniors are struggling to meet bare necessities. They have to make a choice between heating, eating, and medications. Project AWARE will help them to stay warm during the cold months,” said Davida Brotherton, Care Manager for Gwinnett County Senior Services, in a news release.

Local Gwinnett County fire stations will be accepting brand new portable electric heaters until Feb. 28, 2012, on behalf of GCSS and Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services. The heaters will be collected from the stations and personally distributed to seniors in need. A smoke detector and information on fire safety will also be included along with the heaters.

For seniors to be considered eligible to receive a heater, they should be 60 years or older, live in Gwinnett County, and undergoing a financial constraint.
